2012 - The End of Time?

The Internet and TV are full of predictions of the End of Time. The History Channel has run extensive programs concerning the significance of the year 2012 and specifically the shortest day of that year, December 21, 2012. (Winter Solstice Day)

I am aware of Biblical admonition uttered by Jesus in Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only."

However, He does not appear to prohibit man from searching Scriptures or other sources to determine the seasons, or as He put it: "Learn from the fig tree..." He rather seems to encourage us to be prepared.

In any event, this verse was Jesus' answer to the disciples' question: "What shall be the sign of Your return and of the end of the world?" His answer is quite inclusive, some of His predictions clearly happened in 70 AD, many of his answers appear to be a glance down the corridors of history, and yet He has not returned, nor has the world come to an end. He states very clearly: "Heaven and earth shall pass away." Could it happen in 2012? Of course. Will it happen in 2012? Who knows? What about the "Galactic Alignment", which happens only every 25,800 years?
What about the "pole shift", when the north pole becomes the south pole and vice versa? What will the effect of that phenomenon be, or will it even happen?
